Coil planning
Coil Weight & Length Calculator
Estimate coil weight, strip length and pounds per inch of width from coil dimensions, with inch and metric inputs.

How to use this tool
Measure outside and inside diameters, coil width and decimal material thickness. Choose carbon steel or aluminum, or enter a custom density. Switch units without re-entering your dimensions. Results update as you adjust the inputs.
Formula and worked example
A = π × (OD² − ID²) / 4; weight = A × width × density; length = A / thickness.
A carbon-steel coil with 60 in OD, 20 in ID, 12 in width and 0.060 in thickness contains approximately 3,490.66 ft of strip and weighs 8,544.13 lb at 0.2833 lb/in³.
Assumptions and interpreting the result
The model assumes a tightly wound, fully packed coil with uniform width, thickness and density. Actual scale weight and usable length can differ because of winding gaps, coatings, packaging, thickness variation and processing loss. Weight excludes pallets and packaging.
Common questions
Does changing thickness change calculated weight?
With fixed inside diameter, outside diameter, width and density, the annular volume stays the same. Thickness changes the estimated length, while weight stays constant.
Which density should I use?
The defaults match the reference calculator: carbon steel 0.2833 lb/in³ and aluminum 0.098 lb/in³. Use a verified alloy-specific density when you need a different estimate.
