How to use this tool

Enter the thicker strip's outside diameter, common inside diameter and material thickness. Set the crown difference as a percentage reduction from that thickness. Use the slider or type a percentage to compare the estimated length difference.

Formula and worked example

N = (OD − ID) / (2t); ΔL = π × (OD − ID)² × (crown % / 100) / (4t).

For 60 in OD, 20 in ID, 0.060 in thickness and 1% crown difference, the model estimates a 17.45 ft difference between strip lengths.

Assumptions and interpreting the result

The model follows the reference tool's equal-number-of-wraps calculation. The thinner strip has a reduced outside diameter and uses the same inside diameter. It does not model tension, slip, winding gaps, trim loss or the full cross-width crown profile. The result is a planning estimate, not guaranteed usable yield.

Common questions

What does crown percentage describe?

It is the thickness difference expressed as a percentage of the thicker strip's thickness. A 1% difference from 0.060 in means the thinner strip is modeled at 0.0594 in.

Why not compare both strips at the same outside diameter?

The reference model holds wrap count constant. That causes the thinner strip to build a smaller outside diameter, so holding both outside diameters constant would answer a different question.
