Metalworking Unit Converter

Convert length, mass, volume, area, pressure, power, torque, velocity, density and temperature with explicit units.

Metalworking Unit Converter controls

Choose the exact units on your drawing or source document. US short tons, UK long tons and metric tonnes are different units.

How to use this tool

Choose a measurement category, enter a value, and select source and destination units. Swap the units to reverse the comparison. The unit labels distinguish US short tons, UK long tons, metric tonnes and US gallons.

Formula and worked example

For linear units: result = input × source factor / target factor. Temperature conversions also apply an offset.

1 in = 25.4 mm exactly. 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly. 50,000 psi is approximately 344.7379 MPa. 32 °F equals 0 °C.

Assumptions and interpreting the result

Conversion precision is separate from measurement accuracy. Extra decimal places do not make the original measurement more accurate. Gauge numbers are not linear units; use the material-specific gauge explorer for gauge-to-thickness comparisons.

Common questions

Why are there three ton units?

A US short ton is 2,000 lb, a UK long ton is 2,240 lb, and a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Choose the unit written on the source document.

Can I convert gauge directly to millimeters?

Gauge depends on the material and reference table. Use the gauge explorer to look up a nominal thickness, then convert that decimal thickness.
